Mirapoint Provides Reliable, Flexible Platform to Meet Increased Messaging Needs for 3,000 Users
SEATTLE, (Educause 2007, Booth #1209) – October 23, 2007 – Mirapoint,
the secure messaging expert, today announced that Endicott College has
extended its Mirapoint email deployment to include faculty and staff.
Endicott initially implemented the Mirapoint Message Server™ for its student
population in January 2007, when the solution was selected, deployed,
provisioned and activated in less than two weeks, while students were off for
their Winter Break. Mirapoint’s successful deployment with Endicott College
underscores the company’s ability to meet the needs of higher education
customers with reliable, flexible and easy-to-deploy messaging solutions.
Located
in Beverly, Mass., Endicott ranks number 17 among
Baccalaureate Colleges (North) according the U.S. News & World Report’s America’s
Best Colleges 2008 report. This second phase of the university’s
Mirapoint deployment follows the incredible success of its initial roll out to
the student population. Endicott College had
been using an open source solution that required significant IT resources for
administration and management. Additionally, the university was quickly
approaching the 10 Megabyte (MB) capacity limit it had allocated to each
student through the existing email solution. At the end of the first
term, the determination was made that the existing email system would not last
another semester.
“Our
EMUMAIL system was failing and we were quickly approaching our capacity
limit. The constant administration required was consuming our small IT
department, yet we were not able to keep pace with student email usage
practices; we knew we had to make a change immediately,” said Gary Kelley,
chief information systems officer, Endicott College.
“Our only window of opportunity was during the Winter Break of 2007.
Mirapoint met the challenge, successfully deploying and activating the email
system within a matter of days.”
Endicott
had evaluated other messaging solutions and decided on Mirapoint based upon
ease of deployment and administration. The university has a small IT
department to support the combined student, faculty and staff population of
approximately 3,000. Ease of use was a critical deciding factor.
“We
evaluated other solutions but none afforded the administrative time savings
Mirapoint provided. For example, we calculated a Microsoft Exchange
implementation would require at least two IT personnel to deploy and run it,
and we simply don’t have those resources,” continued Kelley. “With
Mirapoint we went from spending two hours a day on our email system to spending
two hours a week if that.”
Mirapoint
Message Server has helped Endicott reduce administrative time, improve the
reliability of its messaging environment, and extend the per-user capacity to
support today’s email usage practices. Endicott deployed the Mirapoint
solution with 50 MB allocated to all students, and 100 MB to faculty and
staff. Increased capacity can be added as well. The Mirapoint
Message Server will also bring greater flexibility to Endicott’s messaging
infrastructure to support future evolution. As an example, the university
has plans to migrate from point-of-presence (POP) servers to an Internet
Message Access Protocol (IMAP) environment so that local clients can access
email on remote servers. Endicott has also been impressed with the ease
of porting data from administrative systems into the Mirapoint system.
“We
are very pleased Endicott College has
extended its Mirapoint deployment to include faculty and staff in addition to
the student population,” said Barry Ariko, president and chief executive
officer, Mirapoint. “By removing administrative, feature and capacity
constraints from their messaging infrastructures, universities such as Endicott
can empower their constituents with the full productivity today’s email
applications have to offer.”
