WAYNE STATE UNIVERSITY STANDARDIZES ON MIRAPOINT FOR FASTER,
EASIER COMMUNICATIONS
University Adopts ISP Role For Faculty And Students
SUNNYVALE, Calif. - December 17, 2001 - Wayne State University
in Detroit has chosen equipment from Mirapoint, a leading provider
of Internet messaging products, to improve performance, simplify
operations, and broaden the reach of its university-wide email system.
Using Mirapoint's flexible Internet messaging appliances, Wayne
State's more than 31,000 students and faculty can, for the first
time, access their personal email accounts anywhere, anytime through
a computer, handheld device or mobile phone.
In today's highly mobile and Internet-connected society, educational
institutions are being forced to behave like an ISP by offering
enhanced Internet services and messaging to attract and retain top
faculty and students. By incorporating Mirapoint 's Internet messaging
appliances into its e-mail infrastructure, Wayne State University
is helping its students and faculty communicate constantly among
peer groups, study teams and classrooms.
"Our students and faculty rely heavily on our email system
to communicate and share critical information such as assignments,
research and reports," said Jim Johnson, CIO of Wayne State
University. "To meet these needs, we require a fast, reliable
and accessible email system that has been customized to meet specific
requirements. Mirapoint has helped us improve our campus-wide email
service through a solution that is extremely easy to implement and
maintain." Since migrating to Mirapoint's system, Wayne State's
messaging service has improved significantly through faster message
delivery, better spam and virus protection, and ubiquitous accessibility.
Using any Web browser or Wireless Application Protocol (WAP)-enabled
mobile phone, users can now connect directly to their personal email
account from any place on campus or from anywhere in the world.
According to a report by Forrester Research, approximately 60 percent
of all students use email and Internet chat-based services to correspond
with their instructors about class assignments or to get specialized
assistance. The report indicates that these students look to instructors
for guidance and as role models, and it advises universities to
integrate IT services into their general practices and culture.
"Today's students and faculty expect higher education institutions
to serve as service providers to ensure consistent communications
among the university community. With limited IT resources, these
institutions must rely on full-featured, easy-to-maintain systems
like Mirapoint's Internet messaging appliances to provide reliable
and efficient services," said Satish Ramachandran, chairman
and CEO of Mirapoint. "Our Internet messaging products are
an ideal solution as universities provide ubiquitous access to e-mails
and meet the growing needs of a continually evolving population
of students and staff."
Wayne State University has deployed several of Mirapoint's Internet
messaging products. These products include the Mirapoint Internet
Message Server, which provide the scalability and reliability necessary
to handle the challenges of the largest messaging environments;
the Mirapoint Message Director, which delivers efficient routing
of inbound and outbound email traffic, SPAM filtering, virus protection
and policy enforcement; and Webmail Direct™ and WAPmail Direct™,
which provide fast and secure Web and mobile access to Internet
messages.
