MIRAPOINT MESSAGING ENABLES OAKLAND COUNTY’S INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY DEPARTMENT TO BECOME AN ISP TO 8000 EMPLOYEES
SUNNYVALE, CA, November 14, 2000 - Mirapoint, Inc., a leading provider of Internet messaging infrastructure products, today announced that Oakland County, Michigan will use Mirapoint’s messaging solutions to establish itself as an independent Internet Service Provider (ISP) to 4,000 Oakland County employees and up to 4,000 government employees in the County’s cities, villages and townships. As an ISP, the government agency will provide Internet accounts to allow users access to e-mail and the World Wide Web.
"Members of Oakland County’s Board of Commissioners have had remote message access for quite some time, but after having numerous problems, they were ready to abandon the concept," said Bob Daddow, assistant deputy county executive. "By using Mirapoint products we were able to rejuvenate the project and offer our employees and other government users an easy and secure way to access their messages from anywhere. Mirapoint came to the rescue."
The Oakland County Department of Information Technology needed a better way to support communications within its extensive customer base of 82 County divisions, 61 local government units including Health and Human Services, Court Services, Law Enforcement, Human Resources, Clerk/Register of Deeds, Equalization, Treasurers and Finance, and 50 private sector businesses.
Additionally, as one of the largest counties in the region, the department needed a cost-effective solution that could support their high volume of users. Mirapoint’s profile fit the County’s requirements for maximum number of users. It also met its needs for scalability, quick installation and important security functions like message encryption, virus scanning, content filtering and spam control.
Mirapoint’s Internet Message servers and Internet Message Routers comprise Oakland County’s new messaging configuration and replace the original messaging platform that consisted of Netscape Messenger and Novell Groupwise. In addition, Oakland County will be using Mirapoint’s Webmail Direct, which provides fast and secure Web-based access to Internet messages through any standard browser, Web kiosk or personal digital assistants (PDAs).
"Mirapoint’s Webmail Direct product gives us flexibility, reliability and ease of use, functions that are important to our highly mobile users, especially police officers," Daddow says.
Mirapoint’s Internet messaging server appliances offer customers a reliable and cost-effective way to route, store, and provide access to messages. Mirapoint's Internet Message Routers and Internet Message Servers handle large volumes of multiple-media message traffic with high performance and reliability while keeping management costs exceptionally low.
"Mirapoint is pleased that our messaging products were able to respond to the challenges Oakland County faced," said Satish Ramachandran, CEO and founder of Mirapoint. "Now, by using Mirapoint products, Oakland County can provide reliable messaging to a clientele that are often away from their desks, but need to stay in constant touch with their colleagues."
