Combination of Mirapoint’s MailHurdle™ & Rapid Anti-Spam™ Technology Stops Threats At Network Edge & Provides Faster Protection

SUNNYVALE, Calif., Nov. 8, 2004 — Mirapoint, a proven leader in email server and security appliances for enterprise and service provider customers, today announced a breakthrough approach to more rapidly and intelligently fighting spam and the many viruses that spread via spam messages. Using a combination of Mirapoint’s MailHurdle™ edge-blocking technology and the new Rapid Anti-Spam™ technology deployed on Mirapoint’s proven appliance platform, Mirapoint is the only security vendor that offers customers real-time protection against spam and many virus threats with no updates required. Mirapoint’s Rapid Anti-Spam technology is based on the Recurrent Pattern Detection (RPD)™ technology licensed from Commtouch, a global developer and provider of proprietary anti-spam solutions.

MailHurdle and Rapid Anti-Spam technology are available as part of Mirapoint’s comprehensive Full-Spectrum™ email security technology, which also includes advanced SMTP connection management features, spam and virus analytics, policy enforcement and content filtering tools, as well as capabilities for providing secure remote email access.

Most email security technology approaches depend heavily on updated rule sets and pattern files to protect customers. Unfortunately, with rapidly propagating viruses like MyDoom that use spam messages to spread, customers face serious financial and productivity consequences if they leave their systems exposed for even a few hours during a new outbreak. With the new real-time protection provided through Mirapoint’s MailHurdle and Rapid Anti-Spam technology, customers no longer need to wait for updates to have confidence that their message networks will remain secure and protected.

Powerful Edge-Blocking with MailHurdle Technology
Mirapoint’s MailHurdle technology addresses message traffic at the SMTP-layer first to block and drop unwanted SMTP connections right at the network edge. This approach dramatically reduces the bandwidth, storage, and IT administrator resources traditionally wasted on processing spam and virus threats. This approach has been proven in real-world customer environments, like California Polytechnic State University and Consolidated Communications, to block more than 60% of the unwanted traffic before any resources are wasted.

Real-time Protection with Rapid Anti-Spam Technology
The Rapid Anti-Spam technology adds an additional layer of protection for customers. Based on the RPD technology licensed from Commtouch, Mirapoint’s Rapid Anti-Spam technology uses information collected on a global basis from network probes to identify spam and virus outbreaks in real-time. With Rapid Anti-Spam, no updates or ongoing maintenance is required and customers can be confident they have a secure defense in place that is resistant to future attacks and evolving techniques exploited by spammers and many virus writers. Furthermore, since the intelligence behind Rapid Anti-Spam is based on real-time outbreak information – not analyzing individual message content – the approach delivers virtually no false-positives, works with any type of message content and language, as well as effectively distinguishes between legitimate bulk mailing and spam.
