Cal State Northridge to Standardize on Mirapoint Messaging
System
Flexible, Multi-service Platform the System of Choice for Universities
SUNNYVALE, Calif., Nov. 05, 2002- California State University,
Northridge is the latest university to standardize on Mirapoint
systems to improve campus messaging and simplify IT operations.
The university chose Mirapoint's messaging solution to deliver enhanced
email services for student communication, distance learning and
integration with other university applications for collaboration.
With educational institutions increasingly under pressure to deliver
core Internet services like email to faculty, staff and students,
existing legacy hardware and software messaging solutions are often
unable to meet even minimal requirements for functionality, flexibility
and cost. Mirapoint is quickly becoming the solution of choice for
these customers, not only for its high reliability, cost-effectiveness
and ability to deliver a broad range of wireline, web and wireless
email services but for such critical built-in features as anti-virus
and anti-spam.
Cal State Northridge installed Mirapoint's messaging products in
10 days prior to the beginning of the fall semester to ensure that
its 40,000 faculty, staff, students and alumni users would have
the most advanced messaging capabilities available. Previously,
the university was dependent upon Sendmail and Messaging Direct,
but these systems limited the school's ability to use other compatible
hardware products.
"It was very important to have a messaging solution that could
fit seamlessly into our computing environment and scale to specific
group needs," said David Sorkin, system technical manager for
Cal State Northridge. "We considered a variety of enterprise-scale
solutions and called other universities to find the preferred college
messaging solution and heard great things about Mirapoint's performance.
We have not been disappointed." According to the consulting
firm, Harris Interactive, 93 percent of American college students
regularly use the Internet, making them the most connected segment
of the population. Around 92 percent of students aged 18-30 own
a personal computer, while 13 percent plan to buy a PC in the next
year.
"Mirapoint's 'one-platform, multiple services' approach is
emerging as the solution of choice for universities with their large,
diverse user populations," said Satish Ramachandran, chairman
and chief executive officer of Mirapoint. "Our messaging solution
offers a continuum of services that can easily be customized for
various groups of users-students, academic staff, administrators,
alumni. Not only does it enhance overall performance, but the Mirapoint
system can be easily managed and upgraded. The result is a greatly
reduced cost of ownership-often a critical factor for cash-strapped
educational institutions."
