Mirapoint Introduces Industry's First Turnkey Internet Message Routing and Content Filtering Appliance
Company's New Internet Messaging Architecture Enables Larger Enterprises and Service Providers to Independently Scale Message Routing, Storage and Access

Integrated Content Filtering Bolsters Security
Mirapoint, Inc., the leading provider of Internet infrastructure solutions for business communications, today announced the introduction of the industry's first turnkey Internet message routing and content filtering appliance. With the introduction of this message router product, Mirapoint also marks the launch of its new Internet messaging architecture that enables enterprises and service providers to independently scale and optimise all three key elements of their messaging systems: routing, storage and access.

Mirapoint's Internet Message Router offloads inbound and outbound message routing from heavily trafficked servers that store e-mail, as well as Internet-based voicemail, faxes, pages and video. Designed to handle upwards of one million messages per day, Mirapoint's appliance-based message routers enable enterprises and service providers to remove the complexity of managing the rapid growth of Internet messaging. Mirapoint's Internet Message Routers can be ordered immediately for shipment commencing November 1999.

In addition, Mirapoint announced today a content filtering initiative that will integrate virus detection, SPAM prevention and content filtering services with its message router. This added functionality will enable system administrators to establish corporate rules for incoming and outbound messages, and ensure the security and confidentiality of corporate data.

As its first available content filtering service, Mirapoint's message router features integrated virus detection and blocking technology from industry-leader Trend Micro (Nasdaq: TMIC, Japan OTC: 4704). By leveraging Trend Micro's antivirus software technology to monitor inbound and outbound messages, Mirapoint provides its customers with the highest level of protection from e-mail-borne viruses. Operating at the perimeter of the messaging network, Mirapoint's Internet Message Routers continuously isolate and eliminate viruses before they can infect the network and damage valuable corporate data. The antivirus software can be automatically updated over the Internet to ensure that customers have up-to-date protection as new viruses emerge.

"By 2002, more than three billion e-mail messages will be sent by Europeans each day," said Rebecca Wettemann, program manager for International Data Corporation's European Collaborative Technologies program. "As electronic mail becomes the primary form of communication for many enterprises, solutions such as Mirapoint's will enable IT managers in complex environments to build strategic applications on a reliable messaging infrastructure."

"Today marks a significant turning point for Mirapoint and the Internet messaging market," said Satish Ramachandran, CEO and founder of Mirapoint. "Mirapoint's new Internet Messaging Architecture is the industry's first integrated approach that allows companies to independently scale all the elements of their messaging services."

Mirapoint's new Internet Messaging Architecture distributes individual messaging functions - namely, routing, storage and access -- across dedicated appliances. This is particularly important for high message volume environments, where demand for client access and storage creates a requirement for additional servers. Mirapoint's Internet Message Router significantly increases system scalability by separating inbound and outbound message routing from message access servers. As a result, the message router intelligently and efficiently directs Internet message traffic to the appropriate server responsible for a specific domain.

Target Markets
Mirapoint's Internet Message Router will be targeted at large enterprises and service providers deploying standards-based Internet messaging -- as well as proprietary groupware environments running Exchange and Domino/Notes that can also benefit from dedicated message routing and content filtering services. Because the message router is fully SMTP and MIME compliant -- and supports LDAP directory lookups to route messages to the correct e-mail storage server -- it can be deployed anywhere that e-mail is being delivered to and from the Internet.

Additional Features
In addition to handling message routing and content filtering services, Mirapoint's message router will bundle new value-added functions. Customers will be able to transparently "snap-in" new features, such as LDAP-based routing of SMTP messages. The new appliance also acts as a client access proxy server, and is the only product in the world to handle LDAP-based proxying of POP and IMAP client connections. Because each of these functions are memory- and CPU-intensive, there are clear performance and reliability advantages to combining them in a dedicated appliance, as opposed to a traditional general purpose message server.

Alternative Approaches
Currently, the majority of Internet e-mail routers are based on "freeware" messaging software with Unix-variant operating systems running on general-purpose server platforms. These alternative mail router solutions require significant setup time and ongoing administration from highly trained e-mail experts. As a virtually "zero-administration" system that can be set up and maintained by craft-level technicians, Internet Message Routers help reduce total cost of ownership when compared with alternative solutions. In addition, Mirapoint's message router provides powerful remote management capabilities, logging and traffic reporting, and system health monitoring.
