MIRAPOINT LAUNCHES NEW FAMILY OF IP-MESSAGING SERVER APPLIANCES
New Dedicated Messaging Appliances Provide Service Providers and Enterprises with Industry's Most Cost-Effective & Flexible E-Mail Outsourcing Solutions
CUPERTINO, CA - August 30, 1999 - Mirapoint, Inc., a pioneering developer of standards-based IP messaging solutions, today announced the introduction of a new product family of dedicated messaging appliances that provide service providers and enterprises with the industry's most cost-effective, reliable, and manageable servers for e-mail outsourcing. Mirapoint's new carrier-grade ES200 series and SP270 messaging appliances are the industry's first turnkey solutions designed specifically to address the demanding reliability and security requirements of e-mail outsourcing - both as dedicated systems for enterprises, and regional hosting platforms for service providers. At the same time, the new messaging appliances offer such a compelling cost-per-user solution that virtually any local and regional ISP, CLEC or IEC can immediately become an Application Service Provider without having to make a significant capital equipment or infrastructure investment.
"The service provider community is actively seeking new business opportunities that can leverage IP-based messaging, and e-mail outsourcing is proving to be one of the most lucrative new services they can offer to their enterprise customers," said Cheena Srinivasan, vice president of marketing with Mirapoint, Inc. "Because the ES series and SP270 are built from the ground up as dedicated messaging appliances that are exceptionally easy to deploy and administer, Mirapoint is providing a new class of e-mail servers that can now satisfy the full spectrum of e-mail outsourcing needs. This includes hosting POP and IMAP accounts on a co-location basis at a service provider's data center, as well as deploying systems as customer premise equipment. With the introduction of the new ES and SP product family, Mirapoint is redefining how service providers and enterprises will implement outsourced e-mail."
The new SP270 is designed for local service providers hosting up to 70,000 POP mailboxes with multiple, standalone virtual domains. The ES series consists of three messaging appliances: the 210, 220 and 230 models. The ES210, with a maximum capacity of 300 users, is designed for smaller enterprises, branch offices, or remote sites with 50 - 300 users. The ES220 and ES230, with capacities of 600 and 1,000 users respectively, are designed for larger enterprises.
The ES series, with its specific user capacities, is attractive to service providers because, as with dedicated web hosting, enterprises transitioning to outsourced e-mail are seeking highly reliable, dedicated systems that do not share messaging services with other businesses. This is important for security, quality-of-service, and performance. It also gives service providers significantly differentiated e-mail outsourcing services when compared to hosting multiple enterprise accounts on one shared server.
Mirapoint continues to offer its top-of-the-line M1000 messaging appliance which is designed for regional service providers hosting IMAP services or supporting a POP user base exceeding 70,000 users. With its greater storage capacity and ability to support up to 150,000 users on a single system, the M1000's computing power makes it ideal for broadly deployed messaging services. Mirapoint's release of its new Mail Scaler functionality allows multiple M1000 systems to be grouped together and act as one large messaging system. This feature allows customers to continually add new systems to their environment without additional administrative burden or downtime.
Because Mirapoint's ES, SP, and M series products are designed and optimized exclusively for e-mail services, they are inherently more reliable and secure than general-purpose servers. Each messaging appliance features standards-based messaging software supporting both POP3 and IMAP4. This messaging software is tightly coupled with Mirapoint's function-specific operating software running on industry-standard hardware. Each system provides inbound and outbound message delivery services, RAID-protected data storage, and e-mail client access services.
Unlike a general-purpose Unix-based server running a separate e-mail application, which requires a highly trained systems administrator, Mirapoint's appliances can be set-up and maintained by craft-level technicians. In addition, the new appliances can be deployed in remote, "lights-out" sites and managed from a central office. To further streamline system administration, the new ES series and SP270 enable a service provider to monitor the operating aspects of the system while allowing end user organizations to control day-to-day e-mail administration tasks.
Because e-mail often serves as a strategic corporate knowledge repository, Mirapoint has integrated stringent security features with the new systems. This includes SSL and SSH encryption, Kerberos authentication, trusted IP address access, denial of service attack protection, and exclusive e-mail port access. SPAM prevention services are also integrated with each messaging appliance.
Practical Details
Each system is 3U in height and can store up to six 18GB drives. Up to fourteen systems can fit in an industry standard rack and thereby support up to 1.4 million mailboxes in total. Redundant components (including hot-swap power supplies and fans, ECC memory and RAID 5 protected storage) ensure high uptime. The ES series products provide investment protection because they are easily upgradeable from one to the next when customers are ready.
