Network
Semiconductor Giant Replaces Software–based Messaging
Infrastructure with Mirapoint’s More Reliable, Secure &
Low Total Cost of Ownership Appliances
SUNNYVALE, Calif., July 27th 2004 – Mirapoint, a proven leader
in email server and security appliances for enterprise customers,
today announced that STMicroelectronics (ST), one of the world’s
largest semiconductor manufacturers, has standardized on Mirapoint
Message Server appliances. Deployed in early–2004, ST will
use Mirapoint’s purpose–built solutions to provide end–to–end
email routing, storage, access and management functions across ST’s
global message network consisting of over thirty sites and 32,000
enterprise employees.
Prior to deploying Mirapoint, ST used HP Openmail software running
on a general–purpose UNIX server for its enterprise–wide
email. Not only was the Openmail–based solution proprietary
with a high ongoing cost of ownership, the system required a considerable
degree of specialization by the company’s IT group and was
becoming increasingly difficult to manage across multiple sites.
In order to alleviate these management headaches, the company began
looking for a new messaging solution that could be managed globally
by a single team, and offer the scalability, reliability, low ongoing
cost of ownership and security features necessary to meet the demands
of ST’s growing business.
“We found Mirapoint’s appliance approach to email was
the best solution for ST in terms of Internet standards–based
design, proven reliability and built–in security,” said
Herve Regad–Pellagru, corporate mail manager at STMicroelectronics.
“Many of the solutions we evaluated were proprietary and required
too much ongoing management, which made them inflexible and too
costly for a globally distributed enterprise of our size. We needed
a solution that could be easily administered from a central location,
and only Mirapoint allows us to do that. Mirapoint has also demonstrated
powerful cost of ownership savings for ST that have helped us dramatically
reduce ongoing administration costs.
”As part of the selection process, the Mirapoint Message
Server appliances were subjected to rigorous performance, reliability
and usability testing by the ST team. Confident with the Mirapoint
solution, ST began implementing the Mirapoint solution in late–2003
across its thirty–three sites in the USA, Europe and Asia.
The complete migration from OpenMail to Mirapoint was completed
in early–2004 and today only four full–time email administrators
are needed to remotely manage ST’s global message network.

Server’s ability to scale to support large numbers of users
and millions of messages, the system will effortlessly and seamlessly
evolve with ST’s growing performance needs”.
With its new messaging infrastructure from Mirapoint, ST has made
significant leaps forward in terms of its enterprise–wide
email and collaboration capabilities. ST no longer experiences the
internal interoperability and management headaches they faced with
their older messaging solution, plus ST’s users now have a
more reliable, dependable and secure communications platform with
Mirapoint. Due to their positive experience, ST is now evaluating
adding advanced group calendaring functionality from Mirapoint,
plus other features for end–user flexibility, like Outlook
and PDA SynQ.
