MIRAPOINT UNVEILS GLOBAL OPEN ACCESS STRATEGY TO BREAK DOWN BARRIERS TO FAST AND CONVENIENT MESSAGE ACCESS
First Product Resulting From Strategy Will Debut at ISPCON
May 22, 2000 - Mirapoint Inc., a leading provider of Internet messaging infrastructure products, today unveiled its Global Open Access strategy for service providers and enterprises to offer fast and convenient access to multiple media messages without the need for costly protocol conversion. Mirapoint's strategy also will enable access and notification to and from a variety of devices from anywhere in the world.
Mirapoint also introduced Webmail Direct, the first product resulting from its Global Open Access strategy, which provides fast and secure Web-based access to Internet messages through any standard browser, web kiosk, or personal digital assistants (PDAs). Webmail Direct will debut at ISPCON, May 23-25 in Orlando, Florida.
As a result of its Global Open Access strategy, Mirapoint will deliver an architecture and products that address the key issues of service providers and enterprises when deploying advanced messaging networks. These issues include protocol translation, message synchronization and the need to render message content appropriately for specific devices - PCs, PDAs, wireless phones and web-enabled appliances.
"Messaging can no longer be restricted to a single access technology," said Satish Ramachandran, president and CEO of Mirapoint. "Service providers and corporate IT managers need to support multiple device access to a common synchronized mailbox, and Mirapoint's architecture and products make it simple and secure for our customers to mass deploy these capabilities."
"Workforce mobility, web access and handheld devices have driven the need for a single, synchronized message store that can be tapped into over various protocols from anywhere on the planet," said David Ferris, president of Ferris Research, a market research firm in San Francisco. "Messaging is critical to conducting business in the new global economy, and fast access to those messages is crucial."
Webmail Direct Delivers Increased Performance
Webmail Direct enables service providers and enterprises to provide web access four-times faster than traditional webmail products. Webmail Direct eliminates the cost and slower performance commonly associated with the software gateways required to translate Post Office Protocol (POP) and Internet Mail Access Protocol (IMAP) into HTTP. By supporting direct HTTP access to Mirapoint's patent-pending MessageBase™ message store, Webmail Direct allows administrators and end-users to retain many of the benefits of POP and IMAP-based services, without the performance degradation and frustration associated with protocol translation.
"Our customers will be able to access their messages from the web faster than ever before with Webmail Direct," said Vincent Proja, program manager for unified messaging at CTC, an ISP based in Waltham, Mass. "End users want to access their mailbox from the web the same way they do from the desktop. Mirapoint takes webmail to a new level with Webmail Direct by giving users high-speed access without compromising features or functionality."
In addition to faster performance, Webmail Direct provides customers with lower total cost of ownership, ironclad security, better reliability, and the scalability necessary to accommodate an expanding customer base.
"Service providers and enterprises have been asking for a high-performing webmail product that delivers the best of both the POP and IMAP worlds," said Ramachandran. "With Webmail Direct, we are increasing the performance of web-based access to messages, while preserving the scalability benefits associated with POP and the advanced messaging features that IMAP delivers."
Webmail Direct Features
Webmail Direct offers a full-featured, customizable solution. For service providers and enterprises, this includes a brandable user interface and the ability to incorporate advertisements. For subscribers, this includes folder support, a personal address book, message search, in-line attachments, split-screen access, mailing lists, signature settings, saved drafts of messages and user preferences.
Pricing and Availability
Webmail Direct is available now on all Mirapoint enterprise and service provider product lines worldwide. Pricing is based on the number of users per system, mailbox use and size of mailbox.
The Global Open Access Family of Products
Mirapoint will continue to support its Global Open Access strategy with additional product offerings with direct protocol support for IMODE, a proprietary Japanese wireless protocol, WML (Wireless Markup Language) and CHTML (Compact HTML) protocols, as well as policy-based notification and enhancements to administration, management and reporting functionality.
