MIRAPOINT LAUNCHES NEXT-GENERATION IP-MESSAGING SOFTWARE FOR E-MAIL OUTSOURCING
Internet Messaging Pioneer Rolls Out Turnkey Co-Location and Premise Equipment E-mail Outsourcing Solutions
CUPERTINO, CA - May 17, 1999 - Mirapoint, Inc., the pioneering developer of function-specific Internet messaging servers for corporations and ISPs, today announced the launch of the next-generation operating software for its M100 and M1000 Internet e-mail thin servers that dramatically expands the scope of system security, scalability and administrative flexibility. The M100/1000 operating software has added SSL, SSH and Kerberos security features, support for the Lightweight Directory Application Protocol (LDAP), a nearly 300% increase in system scalability, and delegated administration. Each of these operating software developments is designed to meet the escalating demands of service providers who are looking for new e-mail outsourcing solutions that meet increasingly stringent security, reliability and simplified administration requirements.
E-mail outsourcing alternatives including co-location and customer premise equipment solutions are rapidly emerging as significant opportunities for service providers for several reasons. Because e-mail is a critical component of a company’s intellectual property, many organizations want to administer their own co-located server attached to an ISP’s backbone for security reasons. And due to the increasing complexity of e-mail, the customer premise equipment approach enables a service provider to deliver full system administration support to free up IT professionals to address other strategic initiatives.
To capitalize on the explosive Internet applications outsourcing opportunity, which Forrester Research has identified as a $14.6 billion market by the year 2003, Mirapoint’s M100 and M1000 thin servers combine appliance-like administrative simplicity and ultra-reliable Internet e-mail infrastructure services. By tightly coupling Internet protocols-based messaging software with its application-specific operating software, the Mirapoint thin servers deliver inbound and outbound e-mail traffic, e-mail delivery, RAID-protected storage and e-mail client access.
Expanded Security Functionality
Unlike freeware software and commercial e-mail applications that run on general purpose operating systems, which have multiple potential security holes, Mirapoint’s embedded operating software is virtually impervious to common security breaches. To beef up the industry’s most secure e-mail thin server, the new operating software release has added SSL, SSH and Kerberos security features. SSL and SSH provide session security so that communications between the server and client is encrypted to prevent hackers from accessing data or impersonating a user at a later time. By adding support for Kerberos, Mirapoint’s new operating software prevents passwords from being sent in clear text and ensures that passwords are stored on a separate Kerberos server which authenticates the user.
These new security options complement Mirapoint’s existing spam control, content and system security capabilities. Mirapoint provides content security through its support for PGP and S/MIME protocols. System security is maximized since administration of the thin servers is handled by a proprietary Mirapoint protocol.
New LDAP Support
Mirapoint has added support for LDAP to the new operating software which provides much greater flexibility in deploying its thin servers in existing messaging environments. With this support, Mirapoint’s Internet e-mail thin servers can be seamlessly deployed in environments where LDAP is the primary means of authenticating users when they log-in and access their e-mail. Given the growing pervasiveness of LDAP in enterprise and ISP environments, this added functionality is key to using Mirapoint’s thin servers for e-mail outsourcing. LDAP makes it easier to integrate Mirapoint thin servers with corporate accounting systems as well as service providers’ billing and provisioning systems.
Breakthrough Scalability
With the release of its new operating software, Mirapoint’s M1000 thin server has expanded the number of users that can be supported by a single system from 60,000 to 150,000. Through software optimization, this breakthrough scalability will enable service providers to support very large user populations with multiple domains that can be hosted on a single system.
Delegated Administration
To provide service providers with maximum flexibility, Mirapoint’s new operating software has added delegated administration capabilities. This enables a service provider to monitor the system operating aspects of a Mirapoint thin server while allowing end user organizations to control day-to-day e-mail administration tasks such as adding new users and managing distribution lists. The delegated administration functionality is applicable to either a single M1000 thin server supporting separate end user organizations with delegated administrative control, or for a co-located thin server which is monitored by the service provider for system uptime while the end user performs administrative functions remotely.
Practical Details
The new operating software release is available immediately. For existing Mirapoint customers with active software subscriptions, there is no upgrade charge for the new operating software release. For non-subscribers, there is a per incident upgrade charge of $3,000.
The base list price for Mirapoint’s M100 thin server starts at $16,600. Base list price for the M1000 starts at $29,100.
