GLOBAL SOLUTIONS AND TECHNOLOGIES SELECTS MIRAPOINT TO POWER E-MAIL OUTSOURCING SERVICES
Sunnyvale, CA. May 10, 1999 – Mirapoint's M1000 IP Messaging Server Delivers Turnkey Internet E-Mail Services Supporting Hosted, Co-Location and Customer Premise Equipment Outsourcing Options CUPERTINO, CA and BAY CITY, MI - May 10, 1999 - Mirapoint, Inc., a pioneering developer of standards-based messaging solutions, today announced that Global Solutions and Technologies (GSAT), a fast-growing Internet Service Provider, has selected Mirapoint's award-winning M1000 IP messaging server as a strategic component of its messaging infrastructure to deliver e-mail outsourcing services. GSAT is actively deploying the M1000 in favor of an in-house developed, freeware-based e-mail system in order to substantially reduce development costs, deliver ultra high reliability, simplify system administration, and leverage the enormous scalability of the Mirapoint solution.
GSAT is currently deploying a single M1000 thin server to host over 2,500 outsourced e-mail accounts in addition to ten individual domains being used for internal e-mail by its parent company, GSAT Corporation. The company is planning to expand e-mail outsourcing services on an international level by offering a combination of hosted, co-location and customer premise equipment alternatives, all of which are accommodated by Mirapoint's Internet e-mail thin servers.
Mirapoint's M1000, which features Internet protocols-based messaging software tightly coupled with application-specific operating software and purpose-built, industry standard hardware, is designed to handle heavy workloads at corporate sites as well as ISPs. The system provides highly reliable Internet e-mail infrastructure services, including inbound and outbound e-mail traffic, e-mail delivery, RAID-protected storage and e-mail client access functions. There are no system-imposed limits to the total number of users that can be supported by a single server.
"Prior to discovering the numerous advantages offered by Mirapoint's Internet e-mail thin servers, we attempted to get into the virtual e-mail hosting business by building a messaging infrastructure through a variety of freeware and mail solutions such as Sendmail and Qmail," said Angie French, Director of Data Center Operations at GSAT. "It became readily apparent fairly quickly that the time-to-market and development costs alone were prohibitive. Plus, the technical deficiencies of the freeware we were working with raised serious questions about reliability, ongoing system administration, and scalability."
"With the M1000," continued French, "system installation was completed in under an hour and we're managing the server with a fraction of the resources we'd need with a proprietary or freeware-based solution. In fact, the system is close to paying for itself in just six weeks. Because of the extreme ease of installation and minimal administrative overhead required to support the M1000, we're exploring opportunities to deploy the thin server on a co-location and/or customer premise equipment basis as alternative means of delivering e-mail outsourcing solutions to our customers."
A single Mirapoint IP messaging server can handle up to 3,500 simultaneous POP3 users or 2,000 IMAP4 users. In ISP environments, a single M1000 can support up to 150,000 subscribers depending on the mix of serious versus casual users, average e-mail traffic and message size, mix of POP versus IMAP usage, and server-based storage requirements.
"GSAT is representative of fast-growing regional ISPs who want to capitalize on the e-mail outsourcing trend, but have been held back by inadequate, freeware-based messaging infrastructures," said Cheena Srinivasan, vice president of marketing at Mirapoint. "By adopting our M1000, GSAT is now positioned to offer a variety of e-mail outsourcing options.
"We see co-location and customer premise equipment strategies growing in popularity for several reasons," continues Srinivasan. "E-mail is clearly a strategic piece of a company's intellectual property. As a result, many organizations want to administer their own co-located server attached to an ISP's backbone for security reasons. And the customer premise equipment (CPE) or 'managed care' approach has well established precendents from other industries, namely Octel in voice messaging and Xerox in copiers. E-mail remains complex since multiple devices must be customized to achieve acceptable performance levels. For those companies with limited IT resources, the CPE approach ensures predictable and reliable e-mail performance. Because of the administrative simplicity of our thin servers, ISPs like GSAT will be able to take full advantage of this growing market opportunity."
