University of Georgia Turns To Mirapoint For Unstoppable
Email
Mirapoint Products to Power University Email, Web Access, Virus
& Spam Defense
SUNNYVALE, Calif., April 2, 2003 - Mirapoint, a leader in solutions
for message networks, with its partner The Newman Group, a leading
provider of information technology products and services, today
announced that the University of Georgia (UGA) has selected Mirapoint
products for campus-wide desktop email and Webmail services, as
well as virus and spam protection for UGA's 45,000 students, faculty
and staff. Mirapoint was the chosen vendor because of the company's
demonstrated ability to deliver the proven reliability, ease-of-use
and service flexibility required by UGA, which increasingly depends
on its message network for communication, distance learning and
collaboration.
Prior to selecting Mirapoint, UGA employed a freeware, Sendmail-based
solution for its campus-wide email. Although up-front costs of the
homegrown solution were low, UGA quickly discovered that freeware
required significant ongoing maintenance and expensive hardware
investments, and lacked flexibility for the addition of new messaging-based
services.
"For UGA, email is essential to the learning process and ongoing
flow of communications between our students, faculty and staff,"
said Greg Ashley, Executive Director and Assistant CIO, Enterprise
Informational Technology Services, UGA. "By selecting the Mirapoint
solution, we have the right platform in place to enhance the overall
reliability and performance of our message network, as well as advanced
services for security and online collaboration."
UGA will deploy Mirapoint Message Servers to deliver POP and IMAP
services for its desktop email users, as well as Webmail for its
mobile user population. To facilitate online collaboration, UGA
will use Mirapoint's web-based group calendar and address book.
As part of the deployment, UGA will also implement Mirapoint Message
Directors to secure incoming email traffic and guard against spam,
virus and hacker attacks. To help UGA meet a late-spring deployment
deadline, Mirapoint Professional Services will assist in migrating
existing UGA users from the old, freeware platform to the new, Mirapoint
messaging systems.
"The Newman Group is excited to work with Mirapoint to provide
industry-leading messaging and security solutions to our mutual
customers in the education market," said Anthony J. Comazzi,
Vice President, Messaging Solutions, The Newman Group. "Together,
we have developed a successful approach to help educational institutions
overcome spam and virus threats, while providing a comprehensive
messaging solution that can support the volume of users and messages
typically found in education settings."
Mirapoint's success with more than 50 educational institutions
around the globe validates the company's value for education customers
looking to upgrade or secure their message networks. Mirapoint's
approach to messaging effectively addresses educational institutions'
need for features traditionally found only in groupware solutions,
while at the same time providing the security, scalability and low
cost of Unix-based systems.
"It was important for UGA to deploy a dependable, secure solution
for its message network, that could scale to meet the increasing
demands of its users, while being cost-effective and easy-to-manage
over the long term," said Bill Messer, Senior Vice President
of Worldwide Sales and Customer Services at Mirapoint. "Our
proven low total cost of ownership, 5-9's reliability and enterprise-class
features are ideal for large education customers, like UGA, that
want to standardize on a strategic messaging platform they can grow
with and easily evolve over time."
