Mirapoint Appliances Power Temple University's Campus-wide
Message Network
University's Email Usage Doubles After Deploying Mirapoint;
IT Department Benefits From 5:1 TCO & Management Savings
SUNNYVALE, Calif., March 29, 2004 — Adding to its existing
portfolio of leading, worldwide education customers, Mirapoint®
today announced that Temple University has standardized on Mirapoint's
email server and security appliances for campus-wide deployment
for the university's nearly 40,000 students, faculty and staff.
Prior to deploying Mirapoint products, Temple worked with a variety
of hardware and software vendors to provide messaging services.
The solution consisted of multiple servers running software packages
including Sendmail, Novell GroupWise and Microsoft Exchange. In
order to deal with increasing email volumes and user demands, the
university IT staff tried to scale this patchwork set of solutions
by purchasing additional hardware and software components. This
piece-meal approach resulted in exorbitant integration costs and
management headaches for the university's IT department, which dedicated
five full-time employees to ensure that the network was running
properly. The problem came to a boiling point when students, faculty
and staff were no longer able to log on to the system because the
mail servers had reached their capacity.
In searching for a new solution, Temple felt that its system needed
to provide the flexibility to scale to the demands of the expanding
university population, without any additional costs or increased
time spent on integration. The university also wanted to find a
way to better consolidate all of its users on a more uniform messaging
platform that could be tailored to service the distinct needs of
its students, faculty and staff. The university considered solutions
from Microsoft, Sun, Critical Path and commercial Sendmail, but
decided to standardize on Mirapoint products based on Mirapoint's
highly scaleable and fully integrated appliance approach, as well
as its track record of successful deployments in the education market.
With the help of Mirapoint Professional Services, Temple converted
more than 37,000 users from the university's old Sendmail servers
to the new Mirapoint-powered network in a single weekend. Mirapoint
also provided automated tools to Temple's IT staff so they could
seamlessly migrate the remaining 2,000 mixed Groupwise users.
'Since Mirapoint solutions were deployed in our network in 2003,
email usage has doubled and our help desk staff is now getting calls
from students and faculty interested in learning more about the
email services. Clearly, the Mirapoint solution has taken hold of
our campus and complaints about email outages or spam and virus
attacks are no longer an issue," said Timothy O'Rourke, vice
president for computer and information services at Temple. 'The
new system provides higher performance and increased reliability,
while at the same time lowering our total cost of ownership and
minimizing management issues. In fact, we've reduced our staff allocated
to managing baseline email services from five full-time employees
to just one, which now gives the IT department more time to focus
on value-added services for the university environment.”
Temple has deployed Mirapoint Message Directors to serve as access
proxies and provide email routing and security filtering, including
protection against hackers, spam and virus threats. The university
also employs Mirapoint Message Servers to host its large user population
and provide IMAP, POP, WebMail, desktop email for Outlook clients,
as well as group calendaring and address book services.
