Mirapoint brings high performance and simplicity for Internet email with its new application-specific servers

London, England, March 12, 1999 -- Mirapoint, a pioneering developer of standards-based messaging solutions, has introduced the industry's first high- performance application-specific Internet e-mail servers to the UK. The solution provides a complete messaging service that dramatically, simplifies any organisation's e-mail infrastructure. These purpose-built servers (also referred to by industry watchers as thin server solutions), can be installed in less than ten minutes and managed with a fraction of the resources compared to proprietary or freeware-based alternatives.

The M100 and M1000 models support Internet-based messaging protocols combined with application-specific operating software and purpose-built, industry-standard hardware. Mirapoint's thin servers deliver a new approach for deploying Internet e-mail at corporate sites, educational institutions and ISP/telecommunications environments. Unlike messaging systems built around general-purpose UNIX or NT-based servers, the Mirapoint solution is a dedicated device, optimised exclusively for electronic messaging, that sets new standards for simple and reliable Internet e-mail. The new application-specific servers are designed for large corporate environments and ISPs that host e- mail and discussion lists. These thin servers provide reliable Internet e-mail infrastructure services, including e-mail traffic. RAID-protected storage and e-mail client access functions.

The M100 is suited for companies, regional offices, and business units with up to 300 on-site corporate users. The M1000 is designed for medium-to-large organisations and ISPs with demanding e-mail server workload. There is no system-imposed limit to the total number of POP3 users that can be supported by a single M1000 server. With IMAP4, a single Mirapoint M1000 Internet e-mail server can handle up to 2,000 simultaneous IMAP4 power users. The products have been designed for unparalleled scalability to provide support for demanding corporate and ISP e-mail environments where clients check e-mail at 5-minute intervals and receive an average of 190 corporate messages per day.

Mirapoint's Internet e-mail thin servers are based on Internet standards, including POP, IMAP, SMTP/MIME, and SNMP. Each thin server is compatible with the industry's major e-mail clients -- including Qualcomm Eudora, Microsoft Outlook Express and Outlook98, Netscape Communicator, and freeware products like the UW Pine that support these Internet-standard protocols. Additionally, the M100 and M1000 can be quickly and easily deployed on a corporate or ISP network, and work seamlessly with existing legacy systems, LAN-based clients and other messaging applications that support Internet protocols.

Bringing Simplicity to Internet E-mail
The M100 and M1000 off-load e-mail storage from existing data servers as well as message delivery and access from existing general-purpose servers. Multiple thin servers deployed in a cluster configuration can provide horizontal scalability to easily accommodate several thousands of simultaneous or active user connections in educational and ISP environments. In addition to reducing e-mail configuration and customisation requirements, the Mirapoint solution also minimises on-going system management. Mirapoint e-mail servers can be set-up and remotely and securely administered using a standard browser from anywhere on the network. Mirapoint's e-mail server is particularly well suited for e-mail outsourcing. Local and regional ISPs can now offer a dedicated e-mail server solution for managed care and customer premise equipment for remote site deployment purposes.

"In the past, the complexity of current Internet e- mail systems has limited its market penetration to large organisations, ISPs and technical organisations" commented Cheena Srinivasan, vice president of marketing at Mirapoint. "With our dedicated Internet messaging server, Mirapoint is the first company to break through that barrier and make Internet e-mail simple enough for a broader market appeal. The advantages of Internet e-mail are widely known, and with this announcement, IS groups and ISPs can minimise their headaches contending with OS compatibility issues and multi- vendor product integration and maintenance."

Breakthrough Reliability and Security
The M100 and M1000 also provide outstanding e-mail security with built-in SPAM-control functionality. Because potential hackers cannot log on to the Mirapoint system as they can with a general-purpose server, the threat of a break-in is virtually eliminated. In addition, Mirapoint servers support SSL and SSH encryption technology to provide message and administration level security.

Mirapoint provides high reliability through a number of design factors. The M100 and M1000 are based on function-specific operating software as opposed to a general- purpose operating system. The Mirapoint server performs only massaging functions. As a purpose-built server, Mirapoint is in complete control of both the messaging application and server operating software to optimise the system for performance and reliability.
