MIRAPOINT FIRST TO PUBLISH RESULTS FOR MAIL SERVER PERFORMANCE
WITH NEW SPECMAIL2001 BENCHMARK
Mirapoint's Scalable Architecture Handles 2,000 Messages Per
Minute
SUNNYVALE, Calif. – January 24, 2001 - Mirapoint, Inc., a
leading provider of Internet messaging infrastructure equipment,
today announced it is the first company to publish mail server results
using the new SPECmail20001 benchmark. SPECmail2001is the first
standardized benchmark that measures mail server performance using
a real-world workload.
SPECmail2001, developed by the Standard Performance Evaluation
Corporation (SPEC), models the stress placed on a mail-server system
in an Internet Service Provider's (ISP) consumer environment, simulating
e-mail users' actions such as sending mail, checking for new mail
and retrieving messages. This new benchmark was announced by SPEC
today (see separate release) and initial SPECmail2001 performance
results are available on the SPEC web site at www.spec.org.
Mirapoint's messaging system managed a sustained volume of 2,000
messages per minute which is equivalent to a 400,000-user ISP environment.
The Mirapoint architecture is comprised of including Internet Message
Routers, Internet Message Servers, and Internet Message Switches
for routing, storing and providing access to messages.
"Mirapoint is delighted to be the first company to publish
results based on the new SPECmail2001 benchmark," said Satish
Ramachandran, chairman and CEO of Mirapoint. "SPECmail2001
is a breakthrough benchmark that provides an objective way to evaluate
the performance of competing messaging servers. Because our products
are scalable, modular and optimized for messaging, we are able to
deliver the high message performance that is required by ISPs."
Over two years in development, the SPECmail2001 benchmark simulates
a real-world messaging environment by varying message size and arrival
rates. In order to deliver a stressful workload, the benchmark concentrates
15 percent of all daily volume into a single hour and then replicates
this workload as the benchmark. Because the benchmark is oriented
towards measuring peak workloads, messaging system evaluators will
find it useful in comparing various alternatives.
Mirapoint's architecture provides customers with flexibility and
economy compared to an architecture based on products from multiple
suppliers. Because the Mirapoint architecture is modular, deployment
and expandability is extremely simple. Furthermore, Mirapoint enables
service providers to "pay as they grow" by allowing them
to make incremental investments in hardware and software as their
businesses expand. For more information on Mirapoint's results,

to obtain a white paper.
SPECmail2001 was developed by mail server vendors and research
organizations that realized that the marketplace needed realistic
and standardized performance tests. For the first time, SPECmail2001
allowed performance evaluations for systems supporting the Post
Office Protocol (POP3) and Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP)
to be tested in realistic scenarios. It is designed for ISPs and
company IT departments that require performance data to support
mail server purchase decisions. It also allows mail server and computer
systems vendors to test and fine-tune products under development.
"SPECmail2001 is the latest benchmark from the Standard Performance
Evaluation Corporation that provides significant measurement tools
for companies that are evaluating Internet messaging systems,"
said Kaivalya Dixit, president of SPEC. "We thank Mirapoint
for its active role in the development of the benchmark."
SPECmail2001 was designed and implemented by Mirapoint, Compaq,
Openwave Systems and Sun Microsystems. Over the past two years,
Netscape, Critical Path, SGI, IBM, Hewlett-Packard and the University
of Pavia (Italy) also contributed to its development.
